- "In C" - Open Showings
Interactive Open Session exploring techniques and methods of "IN C"
»In C« is a dance piece by the contemporary Berlin dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests from 2021. The choreography was developed by the German choreographer Sasha Waltz and is based on the piece of music of the same name (Minimal Music) by the American composer Terry Riley from 1964. The music consists of 53 musical figures that are played by an indefinite number of musicians according to certain rules. Analogously, Sasha Waltz has developed 53 choreographic figures as well as further rules for how these figures can be danced together in space. Here, too, the number of dancers is undetermined.
It is a so-called "structured improvisation". Central to "In C" is the group experience: dancing the figures together in space and experiencing oneself as an individual in the group. "In C" is therefore also a lived democratic practice.
Hwan Hee Hwang was born in Busan, South Korea and is a dancer and choreographer. She studied at the School of Dance at the Korea National University of Arts (KNUA) and, in addition to her dance training, also studied fine arts at the same university. Parallel to her studies, she was a member of the well-known Korean company LDP and worked as a choreographer and teacher in Seoul. After graduating, she began working on her own projects and was also a guest choreographer for the Theater Troupe Georipae, the Seoul Metropolitan Theater and the Ulsan Metropolitan Arts Theater. In 2009, Hwanhee Hwang moved to Berlin and has since appeared in many productions there. In 2012, she started working with the company Sasha Waltz & Guests. She has participated in numerous productions, including "Sacre", "L'Après-midi d'un faune", "Orfeo", "Exodos", "Kreatur", "In C", "SYM-PHONIE MMXX" and "Beethoven 7".
